Our managing director will be walking the south Devon Coastal Path to raise much-needed funds for Great Ormond Street Hospital.
Hilary Collins’ 128-mile trek will be taking her from Plymouth to Seaton in south Devon, a mammoth journey for a cause that is very close to her heart. Hilary’s daughter, Ciara Collins-Allen, has been under Great Ormond’s Street’s care since she was just a few weeks’ old.
She explains: “My daughter has an unusual birthmark (haemangioma). It came up on her face a couple of weeks after she was born, but we also discovered that she had one in her throat too and she struggled to breathe. She was given an operation to laser the birthmark, but it didn’t go to plan, and she ended up in intensive care. Since that time, she’s returned to Great Ormond Street every few months for laser treatment under local anaesthetic – it was too dangerous for another general anaesthetic until she was fully grown.”
Back in April, Ciara, now 17, underwent a general anaesthetic and received major laser treatment. Fortunately, her treatment went well, and the surgery was a success.
Hilary describes her relief. She says: “We’d waited 17 years for this operation, so it was very stressful, but thankfully everything went to plan. Ciara’s journey to resolve her birthmarks has been very long, so I think it’s fitting that my walk to raise vital funds is also a long journey too.”
Hilary has previously walked the Cornish Coastal Path back in 2018 and raised £3500 for the charity, her fundraising helped to pay for new lasers which were used on her daughter’s latest treatment.
The fundraising walk along the south Devon Coast will raise further funds for the dermatology unit at Great Ormond Street Hospital who still require thousands of pounds to pay for new specialist lasers.
