Southend’s musicians and artists come out to celebrate Southend’s rich music heritage

Over 400 musicians and artists attend the private view

Over 400 of Southend’s musicians and artists came out for a private view of the Scene by the Sea art exhibition and map launch at Southend’s Beecroft Gallery.

Will Birch and Paul Shuttleworth from the Kursaal Flyers were joined by fellow Southend legends Jackson Sloan, DJ Snowboy, as well contemporary local musicians David Woodcock, Wendy Soloman and Fiona and Dave Dulake. Wilko Johnson’s long term bassist Norman Watt Roy also visited the exhibition for the opening night.

Private view

The private view launched the Scene by the Sea map, which was the brainchild of The Clash and Ian Dury right hand man, Kosmo Vinyl. Kosmo flew over from New York to attend the event and to take part in some of the media interviews arranged by Big Wave PR.

The map was designed by Jules Balme, who was responsible for designing many Stiff Records releases, along with the original Madness logo, Adam and the Ants covers and lots more. Leading the research on the iconic and legendary Southend venues was Will Birch, the drummer and co-songwriter from Southend’s Kursaal Flyers and a respected music journalist.

The music map and exhibition gained widespread media coverage, both pre and post event. The Scene by the Sea also received airtime on 6Music and coverage in the music media.

Big Wave PR was happy to support the Scene by the Sea. Big Wave PR MD, Hilary Collins said: “The map and exhibition celebrates the significant impact the Southend music scene has had on local and national culture. From Procol Harum, Dr Feelgood to The Horrors, the influence of Southend musicians is widespread and much respected.”

“The launch gained widespread coverage on 6Music, BBC Essex, The Southend Echo and local media.”

Apart from artwork by the much-respected Thames Group of Artists, the exhibition also includes special guest contributions by Billy Bragg, Phil Jupitus, Wilko Johnson and Ian Dury.

The exhibition runs at Southend’s Beecroft Gallery until 24 October.
